South Dakota

I have just returned from a trip to South Dakota. I visited the poorest place in America: the Pine Ridge Reservation (Lakota) in Shannon County. It was a beautifully humbling experience. I spent time at Wounded Knee, the Badlands, Hot Springs, the Crazyhorse Monument, Mt. Rushmore, and Rapid City. I found time to photograph people, buffalo, monuments, rainstorms, and anything else that caught my eye. I plan on writing an essay about portions of the trip as soon as I have a free moment. Check out some of the photos below.

    If you get a chance, pick up some of Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire stories – first of which is “The Cold Dish.” Set in the Lakota neck of the woods, they are entertaining escape. Craig speaks regularly at the Jackson Writers Conference in Jackson, Wyoming.
